Keys List
As you head south down U.S.#1 towards the Keys from Florida City, (U.S.#1 is also known as the South Dixie Highway, the Overseas Highway and the #5 Highway) you will soon enter the glorious Florida Keys.
The keys themselves reach out into the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico for 130 miles or so, from the southeast tip of the Florida peninsula.
The topography will change from the mainland's mixed industrial and agricultural to oceanfront and mangrove.
As you leave the mainland, you will see the almost landlocked water of Barnes Sound off to your left. If the tide is out, the waterview becomes one of low water and salt flats.
And on your right you will periodically catch a glimpse of the eastern waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Salt air, mangroves, tidal estuaries, the effusive keys bouquet of baking flora and fauna on the exposed sea bed...ahhhh, you have arrived!
It is wonderful!
About half way across Barnes Sound on U.S.#1 you will drive past Cross Key, which is not well identified or developed. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, is it?
And then, you drive onto Key Largo, the first major Key.
KEY LARGO
As you intersect North Key Largo, the highway bears right and you will head in a more westerly direction and on into Key Largo proper.
Now, on to the next Florida Key.
But first...are you in a hurry? Stop a moment! Slip into Keys time. Welcome a case of "Keys Disease". The symptoms? Be laid back, speak slower, become a tiny bit indifferent. Think first, and think again and then maybe even a third time before actually doing anything. Let the glorious Florida Keys sunshine soak in.
What's the next Florida Key you'll reach as you drive southeast on U.S. #1 from Key Largo?
It is Tavernier Key and there's more information on Tavernier Key right here!
