Tavernier Key
The next Key you will cross as you drive southeast out of Key Largo on US#1 is actually Thompson Key.
Since I haven't been able to locate any information on Thompson Key to share with you yet, on my next trip down, I'll be sure to dig up details.
Tavernier Key, home of the Harry Harris County Park (among many other sights) is only a couple of miles along from Key Largo. Have a look at the map below left, and you can see where you've crossed the (only in size people) the minor Key of Thompson, and into the more developed Tavernier.
For folks wanting to spend daytime hours in Key Largo or Islamorada, the next major Key southeast from Tavernier, and then to have a quieter, even slower paced location to make as "home base" during their stay, Tavernier Key is the place.
Though folks tend to move on through Tavernier, as I mentioned, it's a real nice quiet place to stay.
